Aldermanic and Mayoral Candidates Forum

The Oakridge Community Association is presenting and facilitating a Candidate Forum for Mayoral Candidates and Ward 11 Aldermanic Candidates running in the 2010 Calgary Municipal Election. Each candidate will be allotted a timeframe to present their election platform, followed by a question period at the completion of all presentations.

The forum will be held Wednesday September 8 at 7:30 pm in the upstairs meeting room at the Oakridge Community Centre, 9504 Oakfield Drive SW. For more information, call Sandy at the community centre at 403-238-0007.

Annual Stampede Breakfast

Yahoo!! Come on down pardners to the Oakridge Community Centre Sunday July 11 from 9 to 11 am for our annual stampede breakfast.

Entertainment includes wagon rides, bouncer for the kids, Little Mutts Rescue, line dancing, pickleball demos, and much more.

11th Annual Plant Exchange

This year’s plant exchange will be on Saturday June 5, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., rain or shine. We will be in front of the community centre unless there is bad weather in which case we will be in the hall in front of the preschool. Please ensure your plants are packed so they won’t make a mess, and list the names of the plants.

Exchanges will be honoured from 9 to 10 a.m. depending on the amount of plants coming in. Purchases may be made for a minimal charge after all exchanges are honoured.

This will be Barb Yau’s last year of organizing this event. If you would like to continue this event and want more information, please call Barb at 403-238-2425 or Sandy at 403-238-0007.

After-School Skateboarding Program

A free after-school drop-in skateboarding program for participants aged 6 to 16 is coming to the Oakridge Community Centre. Taking place June 7 to June 11, from 3:30 to 6:00 pm, the program will run in the hockey rink. A waiver needs to be signed by the participant’s parent or guardian before being able to participate in this program (waivers are available on-site). A skateboard and helmet are also required. Extra boards and helmets may be available on a first come, first serve loan basis.

Unsold equipment and cash pick up: 1:30 – 3 pm

Public consignment! You set the price! All sales are cash only.

Southland Hockey Association sets the following policies:
-The Association is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
-The Association will claim a 20% consignment fee.
-Any unsold items AND unclaimed cash proceeds not retrieved by the owner by 3 pm, will be donated to charity.

New Tennis Pro: Tamy Amjad

The Oakridge Tennis Club is proud to announce that Tamy Amjad has accepted an offer to become our Head Tennis Pro for the 2010 outdoor season. Her contract will begin on May 11 and end on September 18.

Tennis Instructor Profile

Tamy Amjad became a certified Tennis Canada instructor in 2009 but her passion for tennis goes back to her teens when she started playing in her first year at college.

Growing up she was fortunate to have the opportunity to play on grass, clay and hard courts!

“Tennis was my first love,” says Tamy. “I enjoyed playing in the great outdoors and especially singles, where you are responsible for all you do!”

Pure hard work and ambition took Tamy to become her country’s #1-ranked tennis player and got the opportunity to represent Pakistan at the South Asian Federation Games, where she won the bronze medal.

“It was a big achievement,” admits Tamy. “Especially when you consider that I was, initially, a self-taught player!”

After retiring from competitive tennis, she headed for bigger challenges. Tamy became a school teacher, a wife, a mom and is now working as an insurance broker.

She also volunteers coaching her son’s soccer team during the recreational outdoor season.

“I especially look forward to the outdoor tennis season”, Tamy says.

South Glenmore Park and the Oakridge Tennis Club are her usual workplace. Her students range from kids to adults.

Being a teacher Tamy says: “I realize everyone learns at their own pace and my principle of coaching is to keep it simple, fun and ace it!”

Shoe Tags

An Oakridge Community Association shoe tag is required for each player to play on all Oakridge courts – outside and inside. The Oakridge courts are the sole responsibility of the Oakridge Community Association to maintain and repair. Membership fees, shoe tags, and tennis programs provided by the Oakridge Tennis Club, offset maintenance costs. All courts – tennis, squash, pickleball and speed badminton – must be booked online. No drop-ins will be allowed. To book your courts go to www.oakridgecalgary.com. To purchase your membership and shoe tags, call the Community Association at 403-238-0007 or drop by the office during business hours.

South Glenmore Trees Walk-through
